During the three days of Shavuot, Jewish families come together for a complete night of reciting passages from the Torah. They decorate their homes with festive floral themes and share delicious dairy-based dishes like these.
Sour Cherry Soup
For Jewish people in Hungary, early summer is sour cherry season. Since it coincides with Shavuot, they created a flavorful sour cherry soup that is thickened with sour cream. Cinnamon and lemon zest provide a little zing to the flavor profile. The fruit and its juices give the soup a gorgeous pinkish-purple color. It is perfect for an appetizer or dessert.
Here is another traditional Shavuot recipe that hails from Hungary. These pancakes resemble crapes with a cream cheese and raisin filling. After they are stuffed, the blintzes are buttered and baked in the oven. Serve them hot with a dusting of powdered sugar, cinnamon, and sour cream for dipping.
Gooey Kosher Kugel
Kugel is perhaps the ultimate Jewish comfort food. Like macaroni and cheese, it is cooked pasta covered in a gooey sauce. This version is surprisingly easy to make. It features egg noodles in a savory sauce of cream cheese, sour cream, and a little butter. The kugel goes into the oven for about 30 minutes, to make the top and edges delightfully crisp.
Most cuisines in the Middle East have their version of savory hand pies. Bourekas are the Jewish style that is often served for holidays, such as Shavuot. This boureka recipe uses filo dough from the grocer’s freezer. Choose a filling of spinach, potatoes, or cheese—or make a few of each.
