Whether it is someone telling you that you’re a peach, or someone describing you as peaches and cream, peaches have been used as a compliment for years. And rightly so, as the world has had a wonderful culinary love affair when it comes to this luscious summertime fruit. While this fuzzy and recognizable fruit had their start in China, they have grown and spread the world over. No wonder they are considered one of the most popular fruit in America.
We have done a lot to show our love for this grand fruit. August is National Peach Month, Georgia peaches are a popular mainstay, and California is the biggest producers of these juicy fruits nationwide. In fact, even the term “peach” is so recognizable that it has become its own color.
But why though? What makes this scrumptious and nostalgic fruit so popular? Well, one of these is the unique scent that they have. The fragrance is so loved and adored that it is often used in perfumes, candles, air fresheners, shampoos, and even incense. They are so popular that they have been a mainstay for Chinese emperors and nobles as early as the 10th century BCE.
It goes far deeper than smell as well. The scrumptious and mouthwatering unique flavor of peaches makes them great for all kinds of dishes. People make jams, sauces, cobbler, and candies. They have a fruity note, but also have a bit of honey-like sweetness and tartness that goes well with dessert recipes. Also, since it is so soft and supple, they can bake into a creamy and covetable pie, or be added to a great yogurt or made into some homemade ice cream.
If you want to cook with peaches, you have over 700 varieties that you can choose from. While they may not look the part, many people add this sweet fruit to more savory dishes all the time. For instance, adding these sweet and slightly tangy flavors to a recipe like Peach Curry Pork Chops helps to elevate the flavors while not overpowering them. They complement each other well and turn into a great decadent recipe. Making even the toughest of meats taste far more tender and juicy.
Even when it comes to generally non-meaty dishes, like soups and salads, this flavorful fruit knows how to up and ante. For instance, a chilled soup, which incorporates peaches, diced vegetables, vinegar, and a drizzle of honey. How about a salad filled with peaches, avocado, and Indian spices? These can make what is essentially a side dish taste so much better and will alter the way you view peaches long term.
Well, that is about it for peaches, but I am not going to leave you without some mouthwatering recipes for dessert. For instance, you can try out a rich and creamy panna cotta, this is filled with yogurt, cream, and juicy peaches. Or maybe a refreshing peach punch for the summer months, or a spicy peach ketchup for your summertime barbecue?
Whichever way you go, you cannot go wrong. So try some of these awesome peach recipes, or perhaps make some yourself. You will not regret it.
If you enjoy savory pork dishes, you know how well fruit complements the complex flavors. Try my exciting recipe that pairs tender pork chops with a sweet and spicy peach curry. It is easy to make and would be perfect over a steaming plate of basmati rice.
Not all soups are served hot, such as this tasty cold peach soup. It features juicy peaches and dried apricots marinated overnight in the fridge with olive oil, diced veggies, vinegar, and sweet honey. The secret ingredient is tangy goat cheese. Puree the mixture in a food processor until it is velvety smooth.
Give your salads a touch of sweetness by adding freshly sliced fruit. Consider my version of a savory fruit and cucumber salad with plenty of Indian-inspired spices. While the spices give the salad a zesty kick, the sweet peaches, crisp cucumbers, and soft avocado delight your taste buds.
The Italians created a tempting chilled custard called panna cotta. This recipe gets its superb creaminess from fresh yogurt and heavy cream that is infused with almond essence and a sweet kiss of honey. Mix it with fresh peaches and a delicate touch of thyme and you will have a dessert that is as beautiful as it is delicious.
During the sweltering afternoons of summer, nothing can quench your thirst like a refreshing cocktail. Whether you mix this delectable punch for two or for a crowd, it is sure to please. Use your favorite ice tea brand and blend it with a shot of vodka and a splash of sweet peach schnapps.
