In the bottom of a large pan, arrange potatoes in a layer, followed by clams, mussels, and shrimp. Place vermouth and enough chicken broth to fill the pan halfway and top with butter cubes. With a lid, cover the pan and then, with a piece of foil, seal it tightly. Bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for about 45 minutes. Remove from heat and carefully, uncover the pan. With a slotted spoon, transfer the seafood and potatoes onto a large platter. In a small frying pan, melt 1/2 cup of butter and divide into 4 individual dishes for dipping. Spread remaining 1/2 cup of softened butter over bread. Serve seafood mixture alongside French bread and melted butter.
