Cook on low heat with constant stirring for 18 to 20 minutes until the licorice dissolves completely. Increase the heat to medium and bring the mixture to a simmer. Mix cornstarch with remaining half cup milk in a separate bowl. Add the cornstarch mixture to the licorice milk and stir cook for three minutes until the mixture thickens. Beat egg yolks with 2 1/2 tablespoons sugar in a bowl and add a small amount hot milk, to temper the eggs. Add this mixture to the saucepan. Cook on medium heat with constant stirring for another 5 minutes. Pass the prepared mixture through a fine sieve and stir in the cubed butter.
