Remove tough strings and cut stalks into thirds. Using a 12 inch skillet, melt the butter with the bacon over medium heat. After butter has melted, stir in the onion and carrot then cook 8 minutes. Stir in the garlic and cook for another 30 seconds. Stir in the tomato paste and cook for another minute. Add the chicken broth and 1/2 cup of water and bring to a boil.
