1 Tablespoon Lemon Juice0.33 Cup Pecans1 Egg0.25 Teaspoon Salt1 Cup Poppy Seed1 Cup Butter1 Dash Ground Cinnamon1.5 Teaspoon Baking Powder0.25 Cup Honey0.33 Cup Chopped Dates0.5 Cup Sugar2 Tablespoons Water0.5 Cup Milk0.5 Cup Ground Almonds1 Teaspoon Lemon Peel3 Cups FlourFor filling: mix together poppy seeds, pecans, dates, cinnamon, milk and honey in a pan on low heat and cook till the mixture becomes thick, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and keep aside to cool completely. Mix together the flour, ground almonds, sugar, baking powder, salt and lemon peel in a large bowl till well combined. With a pastry cutter, cut in the butter till crumbly mixture is formed. Beat together the egg, water and lemon juice in another bowl till well combined. Add the egg mixture into flour mixture and mix till the dough is formed. Knead the dough slightly till a ball is formed. Divide the dough into 8 equal sized portions. Place each dough portion onto a floured smooth surface and roll into ¼-inch thickness. Now, cut each rolled portion into 4-inch square. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a large baking sheet. Place 1 teaspoon of filling onto the center of each dough square. Lift the ends together to form a cylinder. With wet fingers, pinch the ends to seal the filling. Place the kolache onto the prepared baking sheet in a single layer about 2-inch apart. Coat each kolache with milk. Bake for about 15-20 minutes.
