Coat a 13x9 inch baking pan with cooking spray.Blend sugar, applesauce and canola oil in a large bowl with a beater at medium speed until combined. Add eggs, one-by-one beating after each addition. Add molasses and stir just once. In another large mixing bowl, combine flour, flaxseed meal, wheat germ, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves, ginger and salt. Gradually add flaxseed mixture and hot water alternately to the egg mixture, start and end with the flaxseed mixture until well combined. Bake until toothpick inserted comes out clean, about 30 minutes. Cut the cake into 12 squares, top with powdered sugar and apple slices and serve.
